What I did this weekend

I know I said I wasn't going to update for a couple of weeks, but I just had to share what I did this weekend. I finally did something that I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now. You see, one of my high school friends, Sarah, is an aerialist and even has her own mini circus troupe she started called The Weird Sisters Circus. Well, I follow her blog and have always admired her passion for the aerial arts and promised myself long ago that I would try it out...sometime...someday. (Sarah also happens to be designing my blog makeover for me, which is coming along wonderfully if I do say so myself.)

So a few weeks ago Living Social (or Groupon? Can't remember which one) had a deal for some classes at a local aerial arts studio. Now that I'm not pregnant anymore, I knew this was my chance. So, my friend and I both bought the deal. This weekend we took an 'intro to aerial workshop' and it was awesome! I couldn't believe how hard it was. Well, I could...but I guess I was mostly just shocked with how out of shape I am. I needed help flipping over into the poses, and I couldn't even flip over enough to get my legs up on the trapeze! And, I could only climb the silks to about 6 inches off the ground. But, this just made me even more determined to get back into shape, and to go back for more. I must climb that silk! So, my friend and I signed up for the beginning class. It starts in February and I can't wait.

But for now, I've got to take care of these sore muscles...two days later and I'm STILL in tons of pain. I've also come down with a cold. Yuck.

Bummer

Unfortunately, I have to stop my NaBloPoMo fun for January. In fact, you won't see many posts at all in the next couple of weeks. I'm super bummed out about this, but my blog makeover has continued to cause some technical difficulties. My feed is all messed up now, so anyone that was following my RSS feed is no longer getting my updates. I won't go into all the technical details, but it should be fixed as soon as my makeover is complete. It's set to start this Monday and will take between 2 and 3 weeks. I'm switching from Blogger to Word Press so the makeover is a bit more complicated than just an updated layout.

I'm so bummed because I was doing so well with (and really enjoying) posting every day! Maybe we'll try it again in February.

On the plus side - I'm still going to be writing posts so that once the switch is complete, I'll have a bunch of posts ready and waiting to publish! Thanks so much for being patient with me during this time, and I can't wait to start posting again. In the mean time, I'll still be updating twitter and facebook (and maybe I'll throw in a blog post or two), so please keep following us.

Have any ideas for the new layout? Please leave them in the comments or shoot me an e-mail at thecrunchywife at gmail dot com.

Chore Schedule Check In

Last week I posted about our brand new spiffy household schedule. I really wanted to try something to get B and I into a good routine so that our house doesn't look like a pit all the time. Now that I'm staying home, I get in such a crummy mood if the place looks like a tornado went through it. I'm in a much better mood when it's straightened up, and it gives me a lot more motivation to actually get things done. Does this happen to you? When it's a mess, I just want to sit on my butt all day and do nothing.

So, we're right smack in the middle of our first true week of doing this schedule.  How's it working? Great! Better than I thought it would, actually. For now, anyway. We attempted to start last week, but we hadn't really figured out the logistics of planning on who would do what chores, so we made this our first official week. I'm so excited about it! It's honestly a lot easier to clean when you don't have a million and one tasks to do in one day; It's so nice having them broken up.

To view our full schedule, click here.

I love white boards...I had bought one when I was still working and used it at my desk to keep track of the projects I was working on. Well, since I'm no longer working, I decided to make use of that board for our weekly schedule. We put up all of our meals for the week on the board, along with the week's extra task (deep cleaning a certain room, washing the dog bedding, etc.)

Then, we used some craft sticks (tongue depressors?) and wrote down all of the tasks. We even broke down the cooking by day. (Brian's been doing most of the cooking since Monkey was born, but I really want to start doing more of it...and this is the perfect way to get me to jump in. Of course... I picked four days to cook this week!) Then, we took turns drawing sticks. We chose to be completely random with each task. It worked out great this week, but I'm curious to see how it goes over time - I'm sure I'll start getting annoyed if I get 'poop scoop yard' every single week! Ew. I also got 'clean chicken coop' this week - but Brian's stuck with cleaning the rabbit pen so we're almost even. We each have a cup that will house our sticks for the week. Once they're complete we move the stick back to the main cup.

It was almost fun, but mostly nerve-wracking to pick out our chores. I started thinking about how if this works out long term, we can incorporate Monkey as he gets older. The three of us can all choose our chores for the week, and he can see that even mommies and daddies have to do chores too. Yeah that's thinking way ahead of time, I know. Maybe I'll stick with looking forward to him crawling.

In short - it's working for us so far. I'd be lying if I said we did everything perfectly...last week when we were semi starting the schedule, we ended up having to do both Thursday and Friday's chores on Friday. But, even then it wasn't so bad. We're also trying to take a pretty laid back approach with this knowing that we won't always get everything done. But, I have a feeling this is going to help a ton with keeping our mood up and it will also help us with our budgeting. Once Bri starts working, I know I'll have to pick up a lot more of the work, but by then Monkey will be older and wont be quite as needy as he is now. Here's hoping we stick with this! I know it sounds pretty juvenile to be drawing straws and assigning chores, but if it's what works for us, I don't care. Plus, it makes me feel young again.

Wordless Wednesday

Due to some technical difficulties (haha, that makes me laugh for some reason) - but really there were technical difficulties...the blog was down today. I switched hosting sites due to the upcoming blog makeover, so things got all wacky. So, I decided I'd just post a picture for today. This is a picture I took on a hike somewhere in Portland! The abundance of green is one of my favorite things about living here.

One year ago...

One year ago our lives changed forever. One year ago, I had some suspicions and so I went out and bought a packet of pregnancy tests. One year ago, I saw that first (very faint) pink line. B wasn't 100% convinced that there was a line.  There was. I continued to take tests for a few days; each day the line got darker. Finally, I took the digital test that showed pregnant in words. That's when it hit us that this was real!

We couldn't believe it. It took a bit to sink in, but ultimately we were thrilled! A year later, we have the most beautiful, amazing little boy in the world and we are filled with so much more love than we ever could have imagined.

Since we don't live in the same state as my family, I wanted to think up a clever way to tell my parents. So, we filmed a super quick little video. I called my parents and my mom picked up. I told her that we were e-mailing her something that she and Dad had to see. So, she got Dad and brought him into the office and they watched the video together. It was so much fun to tell them that way! I can't believe a year has gone by already...someone please tell time to slow down!

Video Post: Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap

In December, I wrote up a review about Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap and how much I love the stuff. It gave me the inspiration to create a video showcasing two of my favorite uses for Dr. Bronner's.

Links/products mentioned in video:

My original review post

Dr. Bronner's

Cuisipro foaming pump dispenser

EcoTools brushes (make up brushes made from bamboo, recycled aluminum and synthetic brushes)

What's your favorite use for Dr. Bronner's?

Pinterest

Oh Pinterest, how I love you. Actually, the funny thing about Pinterest is that while I love the concept of it and think that it would be really beneficial for me in organize my book marks, DIY ideas, home ideas, and more...I just don't use it enough. I think I always forget about it. But, I've recently rekindled my love for the site and have been using it more and more. Click here to check out my boards and follow The Crunchy Wife.

A few of my blogger friends and I belong to some group boards on Pinterest, and we all 'pin' various ideas to those boards. It's a neat tool because we all have different themes/styles in our blogging, so the combined interests are great. The boards include:

DIY Childrens' Gifts

Natural Remedies

Cloth Diapering Favorites

DIY Home

DIY Household Cleaning

Healthy Eating

I created an 'inspiration' board for my blog makeover that's slated to start in about a week. I'm thinking something super simple, lots of white space, and a couple of accent colors. I love the idea of teal and navy, but I'm also digging just a teal/gray color scheme, or...if I feel like being super bold teal and orange. I want to make my posting area wider than it is and totally re-do my header labels because I'm just not a fan. Above all, I'm over green. As in, the color. Being a 'green' blog, its hard not to use the color green because they just go hand-in-hand. I'm so sick of it though.  So sick in fact, a few weeks ago I went crazy and quickly gave myself a new header to minimize some of the green. I'm thinking I'll reserve the color green for my Michigan State pride and come up with something new for the blog.

Above is a screenshot of my inspiration board so far. And here's a link to it. Thoughts/opinions? Any ideas for me? What features attract you to a blog? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
